Best Tom Jones album I've ever heard. Mellow and geuine. A really polished performance from a giant in the music business. Repent all you doubters!CD PRAISE AND BLAMEReview date: 2010-09-03 Rating: 2 out of 10SORRY, BUT I HAD TO RETURN THIS CD AS IT WAS FAULTY. I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT THEY ARE NOT SENDING ME ANOTHER ONE. I HAVE RETURNED THE FAULTY ONE AND THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE REFUNDING ME THE POSTAGE. IF I HAD WANTED ANOTHER I WOULD HAVE HAD TO HAVE PAID MORE - DON'T KNOW HOW THEY WORK THAT OUT!Honesty - Marketing Didn't Get ItReview date: 2010-09-03 Rating: 10 out of 10What's the "Angle" on Tom Jones' new album? What's hip? "Praise & Blame" - what fashion trend is it chasing? Answer; none, nothing, none. "24 Hours" was a fantastic production - perfectly meeting the brief to bridge between the classic years and the present day. Tom Jones needed a product with echoes of kitsch karaoke but with a contemporary touch of funkiness in the groove. 24 Hours delivered that - and a little bit more. Right at the end was a song about a boxer. Unsuitably long, and with a hint of autobiography about it.. a man who has done a tough job for a long time, walks away with the money and his pride when the day comes to accept defeat from the younger contestant. "By the way", said the song, "There's real talent, a long journey and a lifetime of determination behind this good-time music". Then came Praise & Blame, and I had to listen several times just to get used to the sound.
Imagine now, all the pomp and posturing removed, and all that's left is the voice and the heart.
It's not trying to be original or impressive. It's just a recording of Tom's real voice - and after you get used to it, you'll start to hear real emotion. The production sparse; though the archaic "Aint no grave" has a sublime arrangement. The stories here are not superficial chasing after style; with the exception of Jools Hollands' Strange Things. They are not pushing style upon songs which speak for themselves; though Burning Hell seems to draw heavily on Ronnie Woods slide work from The Faces.
In that song, just <> to Tom Jones begging the Deacon Jones, "Please pray for me"; if you listen and hear it properly, you'll fall down on your knees yourself and call on God for mercy.
Check out Ethan Johns work with Kevin Prosch and the "Black Peppercorns" for more of that brutally honest presentation of real talent under duress.
